Here's a short story of how I went from hating the piano...

To now being a co-founder of a music school here in Singapore,

Teaching thousands of beginners how to play piano using a simple method we have discovered.

You see, learning the piano can be complex.

How do I know?

Because I started learning music (piano) when I was primary 1 and I hated it initially. 

My first piano teacher almost killed the joy I had in music...

Because all I learnt was complex music theory, boring scales exercises and difficult classical songs

And I had to practice 2 hours a day for the graded examinations. 

All I wanted to achieve was to play a few songs on the piano and enjoy the sound of piano...

But I did not.

I did not see why I had to learn scales, how to read music scores,

And learn things like understanding key signatures, time signatures etc etc. 

And I will never forget the one incident which still remains clear in my mind today:

One day, while practising frantically for my grade 3 examinations...

(it was only 2 weeks before the exam)

I had difficulty memorising all the 20+ scales. 

I tried and tried but I kept making mistakes. 

Guess what? 

I felt super frustrated...

Stressed...

And tears started to roll down my cheeks uncontrollably...

I broke down out of frustration.

It was angry, frustrated tears.  

I shut the book, stomped away from the piano angrily and went to sleep.

(what a frustrated kid!)

From then on, I told myself (and my parents) that I will quit playing music forever.

FORTUNATELY..

I did not. 

Because I met another music tutor who ignited my passion in playing music again. 

She exposed me to playing pop songs (not classical exam pieces anymore!!) which I really enjoyed.  

And the best part was, as I started playing...

I realized there was a pattern.

There was a pattern to playing my favourite songs easily.

All I had to do was to form ONE shape on my right hand, move the same shape around the piano...

And I could start playing and singing along to my favourite songs...

IN LESS THAN AN HOUR!

Let me explain further.

The normal way of learning piano is to firstly learn how to read musical notation.

When you attend music classes in locally well known music schools like Yamaha, Cristofori etc,

(Don't get me wrong, their programmes are good)

They teach you how to read notes on the treble clef (using right hand)

Then you learn the values of each note, the types of musical notes, key signatures...

Before you can play a simple melody line.

Then they proceed to teach you how to read notes on the bass clef (left hand), before combining the playing of both hands.

I'm not saying these theoretical concepts are not important.

They are important for a strong musical foundation.

But for a beginner who is just starting out, this is just tough and boring!

Even after lots of practice, it will take you quite some time before you can play a melody on the right hand.

What's worse is many parents in Singapore send their kids to these piano classes for the sake of getting them "graded" for exams.

When you combine the stress of learning such complex theory concepts and taking piano exams, what happens?

You kill the joy and fun of learning piano.

Learning music should be done in an enjoyable and simple way.

Here's the pattern I discovered:

I realised that by just forming ONE shape on your hand...

And moving that same shape around the piano...

You can form many different chords!

And it'll allow you to sing along to your favourite pop songs.

This is our proven method where thousands of students have learnt and applied.

How it works:

Chords are simply a group of notes being pressed together.

Here's the first chord we teach our students:

As you can see, the right hand uses 3 fingers which forms a "shape":

Here's the interesting part:

When you move this "shape" around, you can easily form other different chords!

The diagram below shows the 4 commonly used chords in pop songs:

You can see these 4 chords uses the same "shape"!

Do you know these 4 basic chords will allow you to play hundreds of pop songs?

When I discovered this pattern...

Why wasn't anyone teaching this in Singapore?

Why can't people start learning how to play simple chords first,

Before moving on to learn basic theory like note-reading?

From my past years of interacting with hundreds of our students,

I've learnt that many have always dreamed of playing the piano,

But gave up halfway because it was difficult.

And for most, they did not have the chance to play piano because:

#1) Learning piano requires money

(piano lessons aren't cheap in Singapore, usually $50/hr for a private 1-1 lesson)

#2) It requires a lot of time

(most music schools requires you to attend weekly lessons)

#3) It requires you to own a piano at home

(a piano costs at least $3000-$4000)
